Alvah L. Hager the first. A short stocky man. My great great Grandfather, was a very influential man. He was the head of the Canadian Fish Company which was located in Canada and the New England Fish Company which was located in the United States of America. He was responsible for setting up and running both canary companies and being the spokesperson for the Frazier River. With the Frazier River he believed that there should be no hydro electric dams and still to this day there are no dams. If there were to have dams put in it would stop the salmon run and these cannery would not have been able to function. When he moved from the East coast to the West coast there was no such thing as a canned fish or organized fishing companies. He had developed the first fishing fleets from the independent men who lived here and had made the first canned salmon. He had later than settled in Canada where he became a Canadian citizen and had the Canadian Fish Company established because back then you weren't able to transfer cash thru countries. At his home stead in Canada he had become known for his leadership, cars, and his mounts in the walls of his house. He had entertained some of the finest guests like the two presidents of America, Roosevelt and Hoover. He was able to take such a big idea and make stuff happen was a very big deal back then. During the depression the companies did not have the cash to pay him, so they paid him in stocks. After the depression ended he became the owner because he owned most of the company in stocks. He had the two companies operated side by side. He was such an influence that in Vancouver BC there is a plaque with his name on this board walk of about fifty and to be on that is a big deal. I have not seen the plaque myself but my Grandma and Grandma have seen it. Alvah the first died at the age of seventy seven and had nine kids and my great Grandfather is the youngest of the nine. He is 97 years old and is just waiting until he gets to one hundred so he can died he says. He had spent his whole life working with the canaries. My grandpa Alvah the second had meet Alvah the first but does not remember him because he died when Alvah was five years old. Unfortunately the canaries are not really around today because they had decided to go to shrimping off the coast of Mexico and had lost most of the money.
